Fantasy naming

Naming a river-world location

A fictional setting uses sound and object-type cues to narrow a place name.

Fictional worldbuilding example. All associations below are invented creative notes.

The naming goal

A story needs a river settlement with a quiet but slightly uneasy mood. The writer wants a flowing middle syllable and a descriptive ending to identify a place.

Screening criteria

Use the shadowed palette, flowing sounds and the place mode. Keep a name that can sit naturally in a short sentence and distinguish it from a nearby character called Mara.

Candidate comparison

  • Veloran Reach: a flowing center and an explicit place marker; the writer likes its cadence.
  • Noxelin Reach: a sharper opening; useful if the location should feel more guarded.
  • Morunen Reach: repeats the opening sound of Mara more than this writer prefers.

Illustrative choice: Veloran Reach

The writer chooses Veloran Reach for its sound in “We return to Veloran Reach at dusk.” The choice supports this scene’s creative brief. “Veloran” is not offered as a word from a real language or claimed to be unused in existing fiction.
